Request for Support for Democracy in Serbia
Open Letter from Members of the Serbian Community in the United States

Dear [Political Representative],
We, the undersigned members of the Serbian Community in the United States, call upon you with this open letter to urgently take a stand against the further deepening of the crisis and to support democracy in Serbia.
As citizens and residents of the United States with strong ties to Serbia, we demand that the United States remain true to its commitment to democracy and human rights by supporting the people of Serbia as they struggle against an authoritarian regime.
For more than a decade, the current regime in Serbia, led by Aleksandar Vučić, has systematically undermined democratic institutions, undermined the independence of the judiciary, monopolized media reporting, and manipulated electoral processes to maintain its hold on power. Corruption permeates all levels of government, and the rule of law is routinely ignored. All of the above is supported by facts and independent reports.
The outpouring of discontent in the form of protests followed a tragic event in which fifteen people lost their lives, including children. In an attempt to cover up direct criminal responsibility for overseeing the corrupt reconstruction of the facility, the government responded with falsification of documentation, arrests, brutal crackdowns by police and paramilitary forces, physical attacks, and unlawful surveillance. The student protests have nevertheless remained peaceful. They have grown into the largest and most determined protests in Serbian history.
The core of the protests is the stance of the entire Serbian society that they do not accept a government that is steeped in crime. Despite the fact that democratic bodies are not doing their job, thanks to these protests organized throughout the country, the entire society has found a way to unequivocally raise its voice.
This crisis has now become a crisis of the entire regime, for which ordinary citizens have shown no sympathy. It is supported by interest groups, including those connected to crime. Other strongholds of this regime are in the manipulated judiciary and the controlled media.
We believe that even tacit support for this regime by the United States would be a wrong and unethical act.
The protests in Serbia are exceptional for their breadth and persistence. They have united people across Serbia — young and old, those from large and small cities. Citizens are rising up to stand up for the fundamental values of democracy, human rights, and the dignity of every individual.
Their aspirations are fully consistent with the principles guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, including the fundamental principles of national sovereignty, the protection of human dignity, and the importance of democratic governance.
The goal of these efforts is not only to transform Serbia, but to build a better future for the entire region. A Serbia rooted in democratic values and the rule of law would be a better partner for the United States and a neighbor to the European Union. Therefore, supporting this endeavor is not only a moral obligation but also a matter of strategic interest for the United States. People of Serbian origin make up a significant share of the U.S. electorate; among them are influential entrepreneurs, lawyers, scientists, artists, and members of the academic community, who have made significant contributions to the development of the United States.
The role of the United States in supporting democracy must not be compromised. We sincerely appreciate your leadership in this area. As a Representative/Senator, you are in the best position to provide support that can truly have a real impact. You can lend your voice to this issue in the following ways:
1. By publicly supporting the courageous students and citizens of Serbia who are fighting for their rights.
2. By raising awareness in your political circles about the importance of ensuring the preservation of the democratic process in Serbia.
3. By appealing to the White House and all U.S. representatives in Serbia and the region to demand that the Government of Serbia implement fundamental democratic reforms, especially those related to the independence of the media and fair elections.
Democracy, freedom, and human rights are the foundation of the legal and political tradition of the United States. These principles are fully consistent with the current demands of the people of Serbia. This is a generational moment, a chance for the United States to stand on the right side of history by supporting Serbia’s aspirations for democracy.
Not only will the citizens of Serbia benefit from greater democracy in Serbia, but it will also affect the stability and prosperity of the entire Balkans and the rest of the world. We ask that you act decisively and ensure that the United States continues to be a leader in the values of freedom and democracy.
